The Office of Strategic Consulting (OSC), under the supervision of both the Provost’s Office and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, serves as internal consulting resource for the academic and administrative branches on campus. In January of 2019 the OSC launched the planning phase of the Policy Library Project (PLP) with the goal of creating a single unified, searchable database of all UW wide policies. I joined the project in the Summer of 2020, during the initial testing phase of the online data management tool (Onspring) which will be used to collect and edit the policies. I was tasked with analyzing the visual styles of policies in their current locations, to determine what would need to be done to adapt them for both visual users and those with assistive technology, and developing a style guide to be applied once data was imported into Onspring. The style guide is broken into three parts: The visible style that users will see when they access the site (HTML/CSS), the invisible style that will allow assistive technology to access the site (HTML) and the visible style that will be used in the generated PDF documents for each policy.
Preliminary Findings: Despite some difficulties with the coding capabilities of Onspring, the style guide is now in a second draft form, awaiting final testing and approval from the PLP Steering Committee.
