S.S. ELECTIVE: MODERN U.S. HISTORYACTIVITY
4: Research: Identify Key Stakeholders.- FILMING
LOCATION: We’re here outside the LGBT Campus Center at UW-Madison, 716
Langdon St, Madison, WI 53706. I’ve
chosen this location since this week’s enrichment focus is on the Modern U.S.
History topic of the American Gay Rights Movement (1945-Present).
- Review
the semester-long project goal: Your Social Studies enrichment project this
semester is to evaluate a Community Action Plan – either a historical one
involving Black American Civil Rights or contemporary one involving the Fair
Immigration Reform Movement. Your
evaluation will use topics you should be learning about in your Modern U.S.
History classes as research. Each of our
weekly activities functions as a small piece of the evaluation report, which
you will assemble and present at the end of the semester.
- Today’s
focus is on: identifying KEY STAKEHOLDERS is essential to successfully
implementing a Community Action Plan.
When it comes to stakeholders, not every one of them will necessarily be
happy about the change – so your action plan needs to identify the ones you
need help from or to overcome. Article 1
contains a text related to your choice, either the Historical Action Plan on
Page 1 or Contemporary Action Plan on Page 2.
Only focus on reading the article that pertains to your project. Who are
the key stakeholders in your selected situation? Use your activity sheet as your guide. AND THEN use Article 2, which directly
connects to your possible classroom topics, about the American Gay Rights
Movement (1945-Present). How does the
need to INCLUDE or OVERCOME stakeholders connect to the broader social context?
- When you
view the text, be sure to look for: In Article 1, who are the KEY
STAKEHOLDERS the Greensboro action plan needs help from, and who are the ones
they must overcome? If you’re doing the
Contemporary Issue on immigration reform, read Page 2 to identify how the KEY
STAKEHOLDERS this group needs help from, as well as the ones they must overcome. And then in Article 2, skim the 1-page
article for 1-2 specific examples that help you explain the broader social
context. In other words, in what ways is the American Gay Rights Movement
connected to ALL OF American society?
- The goal
is for you to be able to: Read and interpret multiple texts in a short
amount of time in order to generate meaningful analysis that connects to
society.
- Remember, the tutor or PEOPLE staff person
working with you is a student just like you during social studies
enrichment. Work together to complete
the activity and place all work in the submission folder before leaving home
base.
