S.S. ELECTIVE: MODERN U.S. HISTORY
ACTIVITY 3: Research: Create a Solution.
ACTIVITY 3: Research: Create a Solution.
- FILMING LOCATION: We’re inside the Class of 1925 Gallery at Memorial Union on the UW-Madison campus. I’ve chosen this location for no reason other than I find it to be a beautiful spot on campus. This week’s enrichment focus is on the Modern U.S. History topic of the Mexican-American / Farmer Rights Movements (1950s-70s).
- Review the semester-long project goal: Your Social Studies enrichment project this semester is to evaluate a Community Action Plan – either a historical one involving Black American Civil Rights or contemporary one involving the Fair Immigration Reform Movement. Your evaluation will use topics you should be learning about in your Modern U.S. History classes as research. Each of our weekly activities functions as a small piece of the evaluation report, which you will assemble and present at the end of the semester.
- Today’s focus is on: creating a SOLUTION to an ISSUE that requires a community action plan to correct. Article 1 contains a text related to your choice, either the Historical Action Plan on Page 1 or Contemporary Action Plan on Page 2. Only focus on reading the article that pertains to your project. Your goal is to read these short articles and determine the SOLUTION the action is attempting to create, and then cite information from the article that supports your findings. AND THEN read Article 2, which directly connects to your possible classroom topics, and use that information to provide important background information. How does your specific SOLUTION connect to the broader social context of U.S. Society from 1945 to the present day?
- When you view the text, be sure to look for: In Article 1, what is the SOLUTION the Greensboro action plan participants are attempting to create in response to the social ISSUE? If you’re doing the Contemporary Issue on immigration reform, read Page 2 to identify how the SOLUTIONS this group is attempting to create in response to the social ISSUE. And then in Article 2, skim the 1-page article for 1-2 specific examples that help you explain the broader social context. In other words, in what ways are the rights of Mexican American voters connected to ALL OF American society, rather than just important to someone who is African American or a person who is undocumented and living in the United States.
- The goal is for you to be able to: Read and interpret multiple texts in a short amount of time in order to generate meaningful analysis that connects to society.
- Remember, the tutor or PEOPLE staff person working with you is a student just like you during social studies enrichment. Work together to complete the activity and place all work in the submission folder before leaving home base.
