INSTRUCTIONAL SCRIPT P.E.O.P.L.E. S.S. ELECTIVE:
MODERN AFRICAN AMERICAN
EXPERIENCE
ACTIVITY
4: Research: Identify Key Stakeholders.- FILMING
LOCATION: We’re inside the Class of 1925 Gallery at Memorial Union on the
UW-Madison campus. I’ve chosen this
location for no reason other than I find it to be a beautiful spot on
campus. This week’s enrichment focus is
on the Modern African Experience topic of the Black Revolution Movement
(1960-75), which evolved out of the Civil Rights Movement.
- Review
the semester-long project goal: Your Social Studies enrichment project this
semester is to create a Community Action Plan to deal with a modern day issue
impacting our home state of Wisconsin.
Each weekly activity functions as another piece of an Action Plan you
are creating to address this problem. At
the end of the semester, you will present your action plan to your fellow
students.
- Today’s
focus is on: identifying KEY STAKEHOLDERS is essential to successfully
implementing a Community Action Plan.
When it comes to stakeholders, not every one of them will necessarily be
happy about the change – so your action plan needs to identify the ones you
need help from or to overcome. Article 1
contains an article related to Wisconsin inequality issues for black
children. Use your activity sheet as
your guide. AND THEN use Article 2,
which directly connects to your possible classroom topics, about the Black
Revolution (1960-75). How does the need
to INCLUDE or OVERCOME stakeholders connect to the broader social context?
- When you
view the text, be sure to look for: The newspaper story from Article 1
identifies significant public school disparities in Wisconsin when conditions
for white students are compared to conditions for black students. Who are the KEY STAKEHOLDERS responsible for
correcting these issues? And then, use
Article 2 to provide a broader social context.
How is the Black Power and Black Revolution movement a response to the
earlier Civil Rights Movement led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? How might this change in approach be connected
to involving or overcoming key stakeholders?
- The goal
is for you to be able to: use reliable research and draw your own conclusions
about the best ways to make our society a more equal place for everyone, rather
than for select groups of people.
- Remember, the tutor or PEOPLE staff person
working with you is a student just like you during social studies
enrichment. Work together to complete
the activity and place all work in the submission folder before leaving home
base.
