INSTRUCTIONAL SCRIPT P.E.O.P.L.E. S.S. ELECTIVE:
MODERN AFRICAN AMERICAN
EXPERIENCEACTIVITY
3: Research: Create a Solution.- FILMING
LOCATION: We’re inside the Class of 1925 Gallery at Memorial Union on the
UW-Madison campus. I’ve chosen this
location for no reason other than I find it to be a beautiful spot on
campus. This week’s enrichment focus is
on the Modern African Experience topic of Malcolm X and the African American
Civil Rights Movement.
- Review
the semester-long project goal: Your Social Studies enrichment project this
semester is to create a Community Action Plan to deal with a modern day issue
impacting our home state of Wisconsin.
Each weekly activity functions as another piece of an Action Plan you
are creating to address this problem. At
the end of the semester, you will present your action plan to your fellow
students.
- Today’s
focus is on: creating a SOLUTION to an ISSUE that requires a community
action plan to correct. Article 1 contains
an article related to inequality issues within Wisconsin’s public school system
for students of color. What solutions do
the people in the article suggest? Based
upon your research and experience, what solutions do you suggest? AND THEN read Article 2, which directly
connects to a possible classroom topic, and use that information to provide
important background information.
Malcolm X’s essay “Learning to Read,” published in 1965, can be used to
provide a broader social context concerning inequitable public education in
U.S. Society. Even though Malcolm X is
not specifically talking about Wisconsin, search for connections that can still
be made 50 years later.
- When you
view the text, be sure to look for: The newspaper story from Article 1 identifies
several SOLUTIONS to the problem in Wisconsin’s schools. Do you agree or disagree with these
solutions? And then, use Article 2 to
provide a broader social context. Ask
yourself: Have the problems from identified by Malcolm X in 1965 been fixed
simply?
- The goal
is for you to be able to: use reliable research and draw your own
conclusions about the best ways to make our society a more equal place for
everyone, rather than for select groups of people.
- Remember, the tutor or PEOPLE staff person
working with you is a student just like you during social studies
enrichment. Work together to complete
the activity and place all work in the submission folder before leaving home
base.
