ACTIVITY 3: Man on the Street – Opinions about Manifest Destiny
ACTIVITY 3: Man on the Street – Opinions about Manifest Destiny
- FILMING LOCATION: We’re standing out on the street, today, because this week’s blog post is a man-on-the-street story! These are stories in which you interview random people in order to obtain their personal opinions and thoughts about a topic – whether it’s something serious like elections or something entertaining like the most popular summer movie.
- Review the semester-long project goal: Remember, today’s activity could become one of your two news reports that will become your semester project – whether they’re written stories or TV-style news stories. Your job is to read this history text, and then use that information – and your imagination – to identify individual voices and people who were impacted by this historical event. Pretend that you are a reporter who is there as this is happening, and you are interviewing people. Who would you interview, and what do you think they would say?
- Today’s focus is on: The concept of Manifest Destiny and Westward Expansion in the United States during the early to mid-1800s. In case you haven’t learned this in class yet, Manifest Destiny was an attitude and belief that the United States not only should, but was destined to expand and add new states until the country reached all the way to the West Coast – what we now know as the states of California, Washington and Oregon.
- When you view the text, be sure to look for: As you skim over the enrichment text, dig deeper and search for THE PEOPLE impacted by popular belief among (most white) settlers during the 1800s. Which groups of people do you think supported and encouraged this idea? Which groups of people do you think objected to Manifest Destiny?
- The goal is for you to be able to: Imagine and then interview the voices of people living way back during the 1830s, 1840s and 1850s when this was happening. Pretend that you randomly interview FIND THREE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PEOPLE ON THE STREET: one person who supports the idea of Manifest Destiny, one person who is opposed to the idea, and lastly a person who is directly impacted by Manifest Destiny – either positively or negatively. What would each of them say or think? For each type of person, be sure to identify their gender, social status, and any other characteristics that might influence their opinions. Your activity sheet works like a news reporter’s note pad, reminding you of key information to find out. Be sure to write down and submit your work so I can give you feedback on it by next week.
- Remember, the tutor or PEOPLE staff person working with you is a student just like you during social studies enrichment. Work together to complete the activity and place all work in the submission folder before leaving home base.
