The Center for Design and Material Culture is pleased to host the second annual Chipstone-CDMC Undergraduate Research Fellowship Symposium on Tuesday, August 24 at 10AM. This fellowship program, in partnership with the Chipstone Foundation, offers undergraduate UW-Madison students an opportunity to conduct research in one of the three pillars of the CDMC: textiles, material culture, and design thinking. The 2021 fellowship cohort includes four fellows each studying in one of those three pillars.
Presenters:
Eden Foster is studying Political Science, Philosophy, and International Studies with the College of Letters & Science while obtaining certificates in French, Global Health, and African Studies. Her research applies design thinking methods to the creation of resources to promote the eradication Female Genital Mutilation in Kenya. She is advised by Lesley Sager, Faculty Associate in Design Studies in the School of Human Ecology.
Sarah Olk studies History and Art History in the College of Letters & Science. She is advised by Jill Casid, Professor of Visual Studies in the Departments of Art History and Gender & Women’s Studies, and Olk’s research examines the central importance of material culture and design to the pop music industry with a focus in the innovations of the synth-pop duo, Pet Shop Boys.
Abby Sharp is pursuing a major in Textile Design in the School of Human Ecology as well as certificates in Material Culture and Gender & Women’s Studies in the College of Letters & Science. Their research is focused on gathering information on quilts in the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection, and they are advised by Design Studies Associate Professor, Sarah Anne Carter.
Sienna Simmons‘ research explores interest in the development of a new Design Studies major through surveys and web development. Simmons is pursuing a degree in Interior Architecture with a certificate in Design Strategy in the School of Human Ecology and is advised by Design Studies Department Chair, Interior Architecture Program Coordinator, Associate Professor, and Faculty Director of Design Thinking, Jung-hye Shin, and Professor Marina Moskowitz, Lynn and Gary Mecklenburg Chair in Textiles, Material Culture, and Design.
Each fellow will present their research and answer questions related to their work during this online event. The symposium is open to students, faculty, and the community thanks to co-sponsorship by the CDMC and the Chipstone Foundation.
