Introduces major civilizations of Asia by exploring the rise and global impact of their vibrant popular cultures. These popular cultures—ranging from the “Korean Wave” (K-pop, K-drama, webtoons) and “Cool Japan” (anime, manga, video games) to those of China, India, and elsewhere—collectively form what might be termed “the Asian Wave.” Drawing on the diverse expertise of faculty in the Department of Asian Languages & Cultures, as well as student interest, this wave is examined through comparative and interdisciplinary lenses.
